ROOM 8 --- Parent Letter
August 2019
Dear Room 8 Parents,
Congratulations! You are the parent of a first-grader here at Mar Vista Elementary School! You will be amazed at how your child will grow this year. This is a year of many wonderful things.
I’m very excited to be part of your child’s first grade learning and to be one of Mar Vista Elementary’s teaching staff. I have been with LAUSD for 15 years: as a tutor for at risk students, an associate teacher here at Mar Vista in a first grade classroom, and a teacher at this school since 2006.
Throughout the remainder of this letter, I will share some of our classroom routines and school policies. Also, I will be sending a weekly bulletin through your child’s homework folder and also have a classroom website (www.ombaomv.weebly.com) to serve as a reminder of things that are going on at Mar Vista and in our classroom. You will receive more information about the first grade curriculum and my philosophy of education at our annual Back to School night scheduled for Tuesday, September 10th, from 6pm to 7pm.
Parent-Teacher Relationships:
I believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is an intricate part of a student’s success in school. Throughout the school year, I will communicate with you through our classroom website, notes, email, telephone calls, weekly announcements, progress reports, and/or parent-teacher conferences. All papers from me and from the school will be sent through a folder that the students will be bringing home everyday. Please look through the folder EVERY evening, empty the keep at home side, and make sure that your child brings the folder back to school each morning. Please feel free to write me a note with any concerns and/or questions and place it in your child’s folder, you could contact me via email at [email protected] or use our classroom website and click on the envelope picture on the top right hand side of the webpage. I will get back to you as soon as possible BUT if it is question that requires a long reply/explanation, please set up a date and time for a conference with me. Please do not leave me phone messages.
School Hours:
Our school yard opens at 7:45 AM and the first bell will ring at 8:05 A.M. Students attend school from 8:10 AM to 2:30 PM. Please have your child line up outside in our assigned area every morning. I will pick up the children at 8:10 AM, when the bell rings. On rainy days, the room will be open at 8:00 AM. Early dismissal Tuesdays (1:40 PM) will start Aug. 20th (first day of school) and will continue till the end of the school year.
AFTER SCHOOL:
Just a reminder that ALL students in grades K-1 (even if they have older siblings at Mar Vista) are not permitted to remain on the yard after school without supervision from a parent/guardian. In addition, students attending on Childcare Permit are not permitted to remain on the yard after school as well. I will dismiss them through the back door of our classroom and if your child is not picked up by 2:40 PM, I will walk them to the office and that is where they will stay until a parent/guardian picks them up.
Birthdays:
I will welcome birthday acknowledgement for your child in my classroom but please let me know at least two days in advance and if you are bringing a special treat for the class. If you are having a birthday party for your child, please DO NOT give out invitations in the classroom. Please mail or email your invitations. Thank you ahead of time for respecting this rule.
Absences/Tardies:
If your child was absent, please make sure that they have a note that contains the reason for their absence when they return. You could also call the school or you could tell me personally about the absence. This is a state law. If your child will be out for an extended period of time, I must know ahead of time (a couple of weeks minimum) so that I can arrange school work to be done in his or her absence. If your child is tardy, we also will need a note from you explaining the reason why he/she was late. A sample tardy/absence note form is attached to this letter. Please feel free to make copies of the attached tardy/absence note sheet. IF YOUR CHILD IS LATE OR ABSENT, YOU WILL RECEIVE A PHONE MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT.
Recess and Lunch:
Your child can bring a snack or buy snack from the cafeteria for morning recess (9:40 AM-10:00 A.M.). Our lunch will be from 12:00 P.M. to 12:40 P.M. (Eat at 12:00 P.M. & Play at 12:20 P.M.). Lunch can be brought from home or bought in the cafeteria.
Classroom Parent Involvement:
There will be classroom volunteer opportunities both in and out of the classroom. I will further explain what I mean Back to School Night.
